Guide for Recovering iPhone Data on Mac

Below is the detailed steps of how to recover lost data from your iOS devices, including photos, SMS, notes, call history, App data (WhatsApp, Instagram, Flickr, iPhoto, iMovie, Kindle) and other files from iPhone SE, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS on Mac OS X. With wizard-like interface and clear instructions, the recovery is easy for anyone.

Tenorshare UltData (iPhone Data Recovery) for Mac provides 3 recovery modes; you can choose either of the options to recover data from iPhone.

Option 1. Directly Recover Data from iPhone

This mode allows to directly restore data from iPhone without iTunes/iCloud backup.

Step 1. Connect iPhone to PC & Select a recovery mode

We need first connect iPhone to PC with a USB cable, and then launch Tenorsahre UltData (iPhone Data Recovery) for Mac on your Mac. Choose "Recover Data from iOS Devices" from the main interface.

Step 3.Preview contacts, SMS, notes, photos, etc.

Now all scanned files are on the program listed by category. You can preview one by one and decide which to recover. To save time, you can just selectively recover those yo u need.

Tips: For App photos, select "Other Photos" and you can find them in this category.

Data in Camera Roll, SMS Attachments and Videos will be listed in time order for preview, which makes it a lot easier to find the data you want to recover.

Print Text Messages, Photos, Contacts, Notes and More from iPhone (Optionally)

You are allowed to print text messages, photos, contacts, call history and more directly within UltData (iPhone Data Recovery) for Mac. The precondition is that your Mac is connected to a printer. Choose files that you want to print, and click Print button on the top right corner. There are two drop-down options: Preview and Print.

Click "Preview" to preview before printing. Click "Print" to define print properties.

Step 4. Recover data from iPhone on Mac

Check the files you need and click "Recover". Before recovery, you can click "Output Settings" on the interface to change save path and select file formats you want to keep your files on Mac OS X.

Tip: Mac iPhone Data Reocvery now supports to sync recovered contacts, messages, and notes directly to your iPhone. When you choose files within the three types, you can see two recover options: Recover to Device, Recover to Computer. Just select "Recover to Device" and wait for the program to transfer data to your device.

Note: This feature also applies to Option 2 and Option 3 below.

Option 2. Recover Data from iTunes Backup File on Mac

Another recovery mode of UltData (iPhone Data Recovery) is "Recover Data from iTunes Backup File". If you have backed up or synced iOS devices with iTunes on your Mac, there will be an iTunes backup on your computer. However, the backup is a SQLITEDB file that can't be viewed on Mac. Now we'll show you how UltData (iPhone Data Recovery) for Mac recovers iPhone files by extracting iTunes backup.

Step 1. Select recovery mode & Choose iTunes backup

Run UltData (iPhone Data Recovery) and chose "Recover Data from iTunes Backup File". The program detects all backups and shows them on the program main interface. Choose the one you need and click "Start Scan" to precede.

Note: If the backup file you want to extract is not on the list above, you can click on "Import Backup File" to import backup manually.

Step 2. Preview deleted or lost iPhone files on Mac

As scanning finishes we are able to preview all the data containning in the backup. Select the files you need to recover and click "Recover".

Note: For App photos, select "Other Photos" and you can find them in this category.

Step 3. Restore iPhone from iTunes backup on Mac OS X

Choose files that you want to retrieve and click Recover button to transfer files to your device or OS X.

Option 3. Restore iPhone Data from iCloud Backup - iPhone Recovery Mode 3

If you have backed up your iPhone data with iCloud, you can restore iPhone data from iCloud backup as well.

Step 1: Login to iCloud Account

Then you will get the interface like below. Enter your Apple ID and password to login into iCloud account. If you've logged in to iCloud on your computer before, you can switch to Software Access which enables you to log in automatically and saves you the process of entering your Apple ID.

Step 2: Download and Scan iCloud backup

Then a window will pop up for you to choose a file type you'd like to preview. Then click "Next" to download. After the download process bar reaches 100%, it will scan the backup file for the lost iPhone data.

Step 3: Preview and Recover Lost iPhone Data

After a while, all the recoverable data are displayed by category. Select one file type on the left, and then preview and select the files you need to recover. Click "Recover" to save the recovered files on your Mac. Again, for text content like contacts, text messages, call history, they are saved in .xls, .xml, .txt file (contacts can be saved as VCF/Vcard files as well). For media file (photos, videos, audios), they are saved in their original formats.
